English Language and Travel Holiday Programme

As Waikato Institute of Education (WIE) is located in the heart of the Waikato, a major central region in the North Island, travel to popular cities and attractions are very easily accessible as a weekend destination or guided tours.

WIE has designed unique English Language and Travel Programmes to suit the needs of many visitor or working holiday visa travellers.   For example:

One option is to study English at WIE for up to 3 months (12 weeks) and on the weekend’s trip to other major cities including Auckland, Rotorua, Taupo and Tauranga.  This course is designed more for the independent traveller wishing to do their own thing but at the same time have a base to come home to.  Homestay or Hostel accommodation would be available and WIE has all the latest information on attractions and activities to do while you are in New Zealand.

Option two would be to study English at WIE for 2 – 5 weeks before joining a guided tour group.  This course is designed more for those students who like their travel organised for them.  Bookings for these tour groups would be done either with the individual tour company or through a Travel Agent.  Homestay or Hostel accommodation would be available while you are studying at WIE and pre paid accommodation will be arranged be either the tour guides or travel agent.

The study programme for this course consists of General English classes in the mornings and Practical English classes in the afternoons. Students are taught Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing skills in the mornings, while in the afternoons the students get to practice these skills. The study period at WIE is only 4 days per week. This gives them an opportunity to travel around North Island from Friday to Sunday.

WIE is situated in Hamilton, a centrally located city in the North Island, within short driving distance to some of New Zealand’s famous landmark beaches, lakes, mountains, popular tourist destinations and major recreational destinations on the North Island. Some of these destinations are Auckland, Rotorua, Tauranga, Raglan, Taupo, New Plymouth and Waitomo Caves, with attractions such as geothermal pools, volcanic mud pools, geysers, underwater aquarium, glowworm caves, farm shows, nature parks and Maori villages. Besides sight-seeing, students can participate in a range of activities such as surfing, skiing, snow-boarding, kayaking, white water rafting, sailing, abseiling, bungee jumping, hiking, speed boat rides, fishing and sky-diving.

In addition, the students can participate in our Wednesday after-class and Friday afternoon activities.  Some of the activities we have organised include playing bowling, tennis, snooker and golf.  For photos of our weekly activities, please go to the following pages:
