English Studies for Early Childhood Education Teachers (ESET)
There is an increased demand for early childhood educators in New Zealand and are currently listed on the Department of Labour’s Immediate Skill Shortage List (ISSL) and the Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL). Trained teachers wanting to teach in free kindergartens and in early childhood English Studies for Early Childhood Education Teachers (ESET) centres would need a current practising certificate, which is required by law. This certificate or authorisation is given by the New Zealand Teachers Council.

The New Zealand Teachers Council is the professional and regulatory body for teachers in New Zealand. Its purpose is to provide professional leadership in teaching and to contribute to safe, high quality teaching and learning environments for children and other learners. The Council is also responsible for the registration of a trained teacher and issuing a practising certificate, which is granted if the Council is satisfied that the person:
  • is of good character and fit to be a teacher; and
  • is satisfactorily trained to teach; and
  • is or is likely to be, a satisfactory teacher; and
  • has a police vet satisfactory to the Council; and
  • has fulfilled the Council's language policy.

An overseas trained teacher will need to be extremely competent in written and spoken English in order to be able to teach and work in NZ kindergartens or early childhood centres. Therefore, the New Zealand Teachers Council requires overseas trained teachers to have a minimum score of 7.0 in each skills category of the academic version of the IELTS test.
